55TH VIRGINIA, COMPANY "F"

The Essex Sharpshooters

1865

The 55th was suffering from starvation, shabby clothing, low morale, and desertion. In March Christian resigned command of the 55th and Capt. James Haynes of Co. K took over. Acting as rearguard During Lee’s retreat from Richmond, the brigade was overrun at Saylor’s Creek where it was shattered. A few surviving members of the 55th rallied to the main army only to surrender at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9.
